Cooler, drier July than normal in Jefferson

July in Greene County was cooler and just a bit drier than normal according to volunteer weather observer John Beltz.

Beltz reported a high temperature for the month of 89 degrees on just one day, July 7. The high temperature was 80 degrees or warmer on 10 days of the month. On three days, the high temperature was only 70 degrees. Average high temperature for the month was 77.8 degrees, compared to 85.8 degrees as the average high temperature for July in Jefferson.

Low temperature was 50 degrees reported July 15 and July 16. The low temperature was in the 50s on 17 nights, and in the 70s on just two nights. The average low temperature was 58.1 degrees, compared to the normal 63.1 degrees.

Record high temperature in July in Jefferson was 111 degrees on July 5, 1911. The record low temperature followed just 12 days later – a low of 41 degrees on July 17, 1911.

Rainfall can vary greatly across Greene County. Beltz takes his measurements just west of Jefferson on Hghway 30. He reported a total of 4.28 inches, compared to a normal of 4.1 inches. The heaviest rainfall during July was 1.82 inches on July 12. That rainfall caused cancelation of the tractor pull at the Greene County Fair. He reported rainfall of more than one inch on July 5. There were 22 days on which no rain fell.
